I usually don’t explain a cartoon. Like a joke, explaining it always ruins it, and more importantly means that it probably was not funny in the first place and should probably be left in the trash. But this is a little different. This week we did a cartoon about guns – and there is nothing funny at all about the gun violence problem in America.

Still, I wanted to say something about all of the shootings, most recently in Brooklyn, Buffalo and Uvalde. There is no way to make sense of it, no way to channel the shock, horror, sadness and frankly, the rage I feel into some short and pithy statement of satirical protest.

So instead, the absurdity of one of the ideas in the gun control debate. An idea and a question about the nature of the 2nd Amendment and the men who wrote it. Does the right to bear arms as a concept evolve with time and technology? Surely, the wise founding fathers, who were men of philosophy could not see into the future and know exactly how guns would evolve.

At the time they wrote the 2nd Amendment, it took a minute or two to load a round and fire your trusty musket. A man could protect himself and his family from wild animals, hunt and defend himself as we moved into new frontiers. But surely, they did not mean for that same pioneer to possess military grade weapons of mass murder.

I think not. And any reasonable person knows that any great right comes with responsibility. And all rights exist in a social balance, where the rights of the individual are measured and weighed against the needs of society to live safely and pursue happiness without having to worry about school children being on the frontlines of a war.

Well, that’s how I feel about it. And so there is this cartoon, where Marvin the Martian clutches his earth disintegration ray gun with all the protections of the 2nd Amendment. Now you know where my head was at when I came up with it.

I don’t think its one of the sillier cartoons we have done, but I hope it makes people think a little bit.
